Lisa Hogan is a speculative fiction and paranormal author. She is married, a mother of five, and a grandmother. Despite the loss of her son Brandon in 2021, Lisa continued writing. She recently wrote a blog about writing during the initial grief process.
In her free time, Lisa loves spending time with her family, reading, and watching murder mysteries. She also expresses her creativity through various art mediums, including acrylic, watercolor, colored pencils, and alcohol markers.
Lisa's writing career began with a children's story she wrote for her son 38 years ago, which she illustrated herself. Although she didn't initially pursue publication, she now self-publishes her speculative fiction and paranormal stories.
Her speculative fiction leans more towards fantasy than sci-fi and is current writing several paranormal short stories with a common theme that will pull them together. "Once I have written at least 10, I'll publish them in an anthology." She likes the freedom of writings in rule-breaking genres - "I get to write outside the box or at least expand it." She will not write straight romance.
Since her writing is not "mainstream" and is such a tiny genre, she decided to self-publish. Lisa is passionate about self-publishing and enjoys the control it gives her over her work. Like many others, the difficulty of marketing is the biggest con.

In April of 2024, she released her second novel in her series, The Moon in the Cards. Her series is a fantasy series with a touch of science. They also hold themes of family drama, mystery, and a dabble of romance. The stories focus on Zelda, a talented alchemist who aims to unravel her encounters' mysteries. She is currently working on the third book in her Zelda Harcrow series, The Page in the Cards, and looks forward to continuing her writing journey. Pictured is the first book in the trilogy - It's in the Cards.
The push to keep writing, even after her son's death, was the amount of people coming to her to ask when the next book was coming out. " Even my mother who unfortunately passed before book two was released. It’s nice when your normally critical mother actually loved your book."
She actively participates in in-person events like the Steampunk Festival and the Ghost Festival to connect with readers.
Her advice for aspiring writers is to observe how successful authors market themselves, write what they love to read and invest in professional editing, as it can make a significant difference. Lisa's dedication to her writing and her determination to adapt to the changing landscape of self-publishing exemplifies her passion for storytelling and her commitment to her readers.
