The Southern Review Winter 2013 by Louisiana State University

Before you being reading, this was an assignment for class and I wanted to share here. My ideas for prose and poetry have always been a top priorty here.

The Winter 2013 issue of The Southern Review by Louisiana State University demonstrates a subtle but discernible thematic unity around transitions and the negation of identity. Across poetry and prose, contributors explore moments of passes, whether geographic, emotional, or existential. While the issue does not impose a rigid thematic frame, its selections collectively emphasize the fragility of human connection and the search for meaning in ordinary moments.

Review

This literary journal presents a blend of narrative and lyrical modes, though the balance leans more toward lyricism. Many poems, such as Flanagan’s and Meitner’s, foreground imagery, rhythm, and emotional resonance rather than linear storytelling. They are primarily lyrical meditations, designed to evoke mood and insight through metaphor and sensory detail. Yet even these lyric poems often contain narrative traces.

Rating 5/5

Beyond the written content, I admired the journal’s visual presentation. The cover design is why I chose it – a pure country girl at heart. It set a contemplative tone that complemented the literary selections inside. The interior artwork and layout were equally thoughtful, enhancing the reading experience without distracting from the text. This attention to detail reflects commitment to literary and artistic excellence, positioning it not just as avenue for strong writing but as a curated object of cultural value.
