Kate Kelly is a science fiction and thriller author, taking inspiration from her profession in science. Writing for many years, she has published several short stories and novels in various places such as magazines and anthologies. She has entered, placed, and won many writing competitions and earned the Eg Yeovil Prize. Kate doesn't shy away from a specific type of genre as she "never really knows what’s going to grab me to write next. I’d like to give historical fiction a go at some time."
Her earliest writing memory includes her father, watching and copying him work - Her first book written at the age of 5 about her toy dragons.
In 2013, her first novel, Red Rock, was published traditionally. A cute, YA Cli-Fi thriller. After going out of print, she decided to try out self-publishing. Since then, she has published The Aric Lands (2023), a SF thriller and Dragons of Dunmoray which released September 9, 2024.
It is interesting to see self-publishers having the same consensus when it comes to the ups and downs of this side of publishing - marketing and finding reviewers that a traditional entity would help with.
Besides writing, she runs. As she has ran a half marathon, she prefers trail running. Calms the mind for more writing, Kate?
"I'm just compelled to write" was her response to the push to keep writing. With that, she all that she has accomplished and I'm sure there are more to come!
Dragons of Dunmoray for example.
Dragons of Dunmoray is a contemporary dark fantasy set in Scotland.
What can you see? Can you see dragons?
Dragons have always been part of our world – only most of us cannot see them.
Alba MacGregor can see the dragons. She thinks she is alone in this, or that maybe they are all in her head. But when she meets Al she realises, not only that the dragons are real, but that there are others like her, spread across the world.
The dragons are stirring. There’s a war coming. A war that has been ongoing for millennia. Only Alba can break this cycle, but to do so she must first defeat a foe much closer to home and far more human.
Only good things are in the future for Kate Kelly. Her advice for those on their debut path is to find a good critique group and study the craft!
